D@H: BOINC client upgrade request: cancelled

:-) I got 2 requests to upgrade my clients from 5.8.15 (linux) because they report to projects "Authentic AMD" and keep all them 'badges' and 'family designations' secret ;)

I only got 1 request cancelled email

boinc client 5.8.17. It seems that this version requires version 2.4 of a system library (glibc)

My thoughts were 'how 2 check' (thanks again google)

I have 2.4 upgrade BOINC (y/n)
I have 2.3 are the family and badges reported to My client of use ?

1 machine is running 'doze atm was gunna try put suse on it next week, so I'll see if there is a newer BOINC then.

something I just realized. the version of BOINC I run is Augustine's 64 bit. so I will look @ A's dl page to see if there is a .17 there yet.

no, not yet :(

the two machines (of 7) that .15 doesn,t pass the family and badges for are both the same family and same 27 badges (3800 x2 & 4200 x2)

I believe I am running Augustine's .17 on two machines. I'll double check to see where I got it.

So can someone tell me if the correct information is now reported for Linux on the latest (5.8.17) not recommended version?
Is the glibc 2.4 now included or backward compatiable in this version.
As it is not recommended then should I wait till it is.
I am running 5.8.11 (reports as 5.8.8).

Thanks

5.8.17 is definitely an alpha version, but seems to work okay now that we have fixed the server-side bug associated with long model strings. Other people on the boards seem to be running it fine too. You can always give it a try on one machine and see how it goes. If it goes well, upgrade others too, if not, go back to the 8.11 version.

Is the glibc 2.4 now included or backward compatiable in this version.

If you have a glibc 2.3 host, definitely don't upgrade, because it won't work. So only newer distros will be able to run it. I know that SuSE 10.1 and up works with it.

As it is not recommended then should I wait till it is.
I am running 5.8.11 (reports as 5.8.8).

If you like a challenge so now and then try it out (and help us with that if it works). Especially check the model string that is reported when you start up the client. If it has a Family/Model/Stepping number in it, you should be good to go.

Thanks

Thanks!

Andre would have to say for sure but I'm fairly certain that the most important part in the new HR rules is the AuthenticAMD and Family/Model/Stepping. I would guess that the other info would be used to refine the HR algorithms later on, but that's just a guess.

I'm rather surprised that it was cut off in the xml file. I think a change has been checked in to make the buffer on the BOINC client larger, but it must not be in the test version of the client on the BOINC website yet.

Yes, this is a problem with the length of the model string and David is right in that we only use the AuthenticAMD and Family/Model/Stepping part of it. There's talk on the boinc list that the capabilities part will be removed alltogether since no projects are using it at the moment. The problem is that the database field that holds that information is only 255 bytes long (a socalled varchar(254)). I'll post this in the boinc_dev list so maybe it can be fixed or someone can confirm the capabilities removal.

Thanks
Andre

There was a post on boinc_dev from David A. that I missed that states that a change to the client has been made that removes the capabilities info (called features by David A.):

David 19 Mar 2007
- removed [features] from p_model;
move it to a separate field, p_features,
which is stored on the client and sent to server
but not stored in server DB.

A client with this code has not been released though. But as said before, the cut off string should not impact our filtering.

Thanks
Andre

Aaawww :-( was hope'n I'd broke spmething

had a laugh earlier seeing my host immortalized on boinc_dev lol

I notice my machine went from asking for 25-30 / wu to asking for 47, which is in line with your 49, looks like this linux/boinc is at last fairly equal to windoze.
Today's project, if I have time, is to 'nix 2 'dozers and 'doze a 'nix'r .You see I mention this here by way of appology, it seems I have become addicted to My teams project of the month (potm). This month I had a lot of fun, I made #5 'top gun' on our team and managed over 40 000 cs for mcp, our team did over 1 million :-). 325 posts on the topic and 103 votes on the new potm, abc, new team members drawn to the team by the thread, or seeing themselves suddenly passed by a bunch of synergiers in the stats ;-). past potm's enjoy increased crunching and they all seem to have found 'advocates' in our forum (and shout box),can't wait till I can vote for My favorite project ;-)

o, last month We needed every cobblestone We could get, We caught 1 team easy and 1 We catch maybe today. This month We catch 1 team Realy easy (sorry Tutta :p lol) the next We'd have to avg 130 000 /day ,anywhere in between is cool to Me so I should be able to piece You off a bit ;-)

lol sorry I rambled on off topic there thats what happens when I'm made to feel guilty by reciept of something like this

we need you back to help us test the effectivity of this new setup. So please if you suspended D@H, resume the project again. In case you disconnected from the project, please reconnect to us; we would love to have you back onboard!

got the .17 on 2 more as I wrote this 1817 & 1824 2 to go
